it was a sad fate, really. she was sure someone who had known their parents would have scolded her - your mother and father raised you for so much better, why can't you just be better? but she couldn't hardly be bothered with them. sure, their parents had raised them better. but they'd also gone and gotten themselves offed so young, leaving her to take care of little alonzo all by herself. how old had they been then? eight? something like that.
and anyway, there wasn't another way that a mutant could run a successful business unless it dealt in something illegal. if leo had a choice, she might have selected much more demure - pot holders, for example, or perhaps calendars with cute animals on them. but what kind of refugee or rebel wanted to be a flipping calendar? no-kind, that's who, and when you knew you had only yourself and your twin to rely on for cash, you went to whatever lengths you needed to.
but sometimes she got days off, and sometimes she would spend these days off in the bar. not that she didn't love alonzo - she did, gosh she did! - but it was nice to be able to go and spend some of her own cash on some booze. what could she say? it was a hard life she led, and if she could ease it a little with some alcohol and pretty people, it wouldn't have been much of a problem.
a regular-enough patron in the bar, she was greeted by a wave from the bartender and a nod from some swill in the corner. harrumphing a little, the redhead made her way to the bar and sat down, putting down a crumpled bill.
"something rough, amigo," she said, leaning on the counter. "it's been a long week."

Though, Alonzo couldn't help but wonder if his errands could really be considered 'grocery shopping'. More or less, he only went and received his and his sister's food rations before returning to the pitiful excuse of a home. That among other things like purchasing the drugs for cheap and the weaponry that the family business was based upon were also among the supposed groceries that he purchased earlier that evening. Illegal drugs and weaponry for that matter. The younger twin grimaced at the thought. It had hardly been the top of their occupation list. Sometimes, he had debated taking up a job. Some job, any job. Anywhere. Something. Something that wasn't involved in something so dirty. Sucio, he thought. Dirty. They were dirty. But he spoke no words in opposition to this occupation then. And he spoke no words in opposition now. It was easier to accept things and move on, he thought. There was no room for hesitation in this place. And he didn't dare do so now. But that was far from the point. Alonzo, no. Allie, he reminded himself, kept his hands in his pockets as he walked down to the Southern Harlow District. His eyes remained on the ground, fearful that if he looked up; he would face trouble. He didn't dare speak either, only half heartedly mumbling apologies to the people that he bumped into. " Lo siento. Perdón." He repeated these words like a mantra every time someone bumped into his shoulder. Was it his fault? No. Of course not. But it was habit. And habits were hard to break. He had a faint idea of where Leo had gone off to. She would sometimes come home, smelling faintly of alcohol. It was a strong kind of scent, he noted. One that he wasn't all too particularly fond of. It sometimes made him nervous. And it was for that fear that the boy hesitated, meandering outside of the door to the Pryce's Chalice. It terrified him. The activities that occurred in there, he thought, were hardly compliant with laws. But who was he to think about such things? The redhead wandered into the waves of people, letting out sharp squeaks of fear as bodies hit him on every side. It was hardly late at all, yet the people failed to stop. He didn't want to imagine the kind of activity that occurred at midnight. " Lo siento, lo siento, lo siento!" He said quickly, the foreign language coming to his tongue faster than the words were in English. All the words were jumbled in his head as he finally managed to get free of the hordes of others. Allie panted, clutching his hand to his chest as he tried to stall out his quickly beating heart. Large crowds made him nervous. They always had. He rested his hands on his knees, breathing heavily. He knew he could have just as easily used his powers to weave through the crowd. Though, he hardly thought he could constitute turning into mist as a common occurrence. It was easier to get into the city through the Southern District, he knew. But it still wasn't exactly among the smartest of moves to go about showing off. He straightened up, glancing around at the bar. His eyes were met with a few other strange gazes before he caught sight of Leonora. He walked over to her, quiet. It was always awkward going and fetching his sister. She was no child, he knew. And he was no parent. But even so, on these nights; he often found himself coming to the same place to bring her home. But it seemed as though he had caught her out earlier than usual. She hardly smelled of alcohol if at all. His lips parted, mouthing a soft hello to the bartender who both acknowledged his sister as well as Alonzo. The man turned again, mixing the drink requested quietly. " Hermana," He said next. " When are you going to come home...? I know it isn't late yet but I just want to know when to come get you." Pause. " Also, what do you want for la cena for when you get home?" it might have been her choice of occupation that made her feel this way. the constant exhaustion was not enough to keep her from selling her drugs and arms, rattling customers until they gave in, or arguing with a supplier obnoxiously until they saw things her way. but there was no denying that what she did - what they did - was tiring. it took a lot of effort and energy that sometimes, leo didn't think she could give. she aged slower than the average human. she could heal herself with the slightest flicker of thought. but she was constantly tired - and it wasn't the kind of tired that sleep could fix, either.
but allie was definitely worth it.
everything she did, every nap she skipped, every meal she shaved in order to save a little extra, was for her brother. she was determined that the two of them would be living in the lap of luxury someday - at least he would. if she had to work her fingers to the knobby bone to get him there, she would do it. would she.
leonora started when she heard a familiar voice. she had been completely enthralled with her own thoughts, and so hadn't noticed when her brother approached her from the mass of people in the club. she turned in her seat, smiling a radiant smile at her younger brother.
"allie, i didn't know you were already coming for me. i haven't even had a drink yet!" she patted the seat next to her. normally, she wouldn't condone her twin hanging around in a place like this; he was much too pretty, and plenty of creepers would have looked at him and seen a wonderland. but she was here with him, so they wouldn't dare. "i'm just here for a little bit. do you want to sit with me until we go home?" her smile turned a little tired. "i was just treating myself for a long week. ven, siéntate." She always put up a brave front and said it was nada. Nothing. Though, sometimes he couldn't help but worry that it was something. It was something that she was concerned over but never admitted. He worried when she missed sleep. When she missed meals. And yet, he thought, perhaps it was strange he worried so often. Was it? Or was it normal? He didn't know. What they had now, he thought. That was all they knew. Perdóname madre y el padre. No tenemos ninguna otra manera. He thought. They had no other ways. They had no other decisions. He hesitated for a moment longer, silent as he stared on at his sister. The pulsating music of the bar continued pounding in his ears as the redhead struggled to comprehend Leo's next words. " Mm..." He replied, biting his lower lip as he tried hard to resist the girl's name for him. Once upon a time, he had once gone by Alonzo. Though, that day had long since passed when his twin began to call him Allie. He had never been able to get rid of it, he thought. He never would and thus, he never did. Perhaps he should have come up with a name for her as well? Would she mind it? Or did she prefer Leo as she often told him? " I did not know you just came here, hermana." He replied, laughing softly as he rubbed the back of his head. " You were not at our home so I was worried that something happened..." It wouldn't have been the first time, he thought. Being involved in illegal things like they were usually wasn't particularly the safest occupation and because of it, he often feared that he or his sister would be harmed as a result. But fears were fears. They were nothing that he or anyone else could help. " Well..." Allie said uncomfortably, grasping at the edge of his shirt for a moment before advancing a bit closer. He moved himself onto the seat of the bar stool before looking at her. " If it's only for un minuto." He held up one finger to her, nodding quietly before letting his arm fall back to his side. One. Only one minute. Two, three, four, five minutes. " Oh?" He asked next. He frowned then, resting his elbow on the polished counter. He held his cheek in the palm of his hand as he looked on at his sister. " Have people been giving you trouble at work, hermana?" [/style] MADE BY KIWII OF BTN & OTE |

but she shouldn't be ungrateful. the fact that they had any business at all alone was lucky; though the business was a hard one, they were prospering. they might even be the best arms and drug business out there! this made leon a little bit proud, if not because they had built it from absolutely nothing. the time that she and alonzo had spent meticulously collecting their wares, saving up money, purchasing from suppliers, and then charging outrageous prices for their own merchandise had been well-worth-it, in the long run. she only hoped that it could grow a little more, so that at least her brother could get into something a lot more respectable. knitting, perhaps. he could make potholders and sell those.
but she was degrading him. sighing mentally, she chastised herself. alonzo was just as much a part of this as she was, even if she liked to shoulder the burdens all by herself. she was strong. she was protecting allie. that was all there was to it - the strong, cold truth was that she would always do this until the day she died.
youthfully, she grinned at her brother. "just a minute, then," she agreed, though leo knew that it would probably be much longer than just a minute. it always was. at her brother's inquiry, however, she shrugged it off. "haven't people always given me trouble?" she quipped, giving another smile, bright as a burning star. "i'm a girl in a man's job. people don't want to pay the money that we ask for our special wares. people are always a hassle." she took his hand and squeezed it reassuringly. "i wouldn't worry, mi dulce hermano. you are far too pretty to worry about something as trivial as negative people."
the bartender placed her drink in front of her, and she thanked him with a wave of her hand. lifting the glass, she took a drink; the liquid burned just enough to wash away some of the tiredness, even if for a moment. she gave a heavy sigh.
"sometimes, i think about getting out of the business," leo said, looking infinitely exhausted for a moment. "sometimes i think it would be better. but then i say, 'no, estás siendo estúpido, leo', because i know that i wouldn't have nearly enough money to put you somewhere you'd be safe and happy."

It earned them some street cred here and there, though; he very rarely had such a thing. It was more or less his sister. He was very much the woman in their relationship, he thought. The boy sighed a little at the thought, running his fingers through his scarlet red hair. It was annoying sometimes, but if he wasn't it; he highly doubted Leo would have been. He didn't doubt that the woman was hellbent on getting him into some respectable job. Cooking or growing flowers or something, he thought. He didn't want any of those jobs though. They shared this, he thought. They would always share this. As long as one of the two suffered, they both suffered. That's how it would be. That's how it had always been. Allie lifted a hand to his mouth, covering it as he laughed slightly. " That's a good question." He replied, grinning quietly at his sister. When did they not give her trouble? If anything, it would be a miracle in itself if they didn't. " You could always hit them." He replied innocently. Leo always hit hard, he remembered. There were many a pillow fight that always ended up with Allie having a mild concussion. He lifted his hand up and curled it into a fist before punching the palm of his other hand. " Or I could, hermana." His lips curled upward in a silly little smile. " Just tell me when, eh?" She grabbed her hand then and the boy brushed his thumb over Leonora's smaller hand. No matter how much she tried, she was still a girl. These small hands, he thought, were evidence of that. He squeezed gently too, offering her a soft smile. " You could quit if you want." He replied, the edges of his lips curling upward. " No one's making you." Alonzo replied. " Mm." He said softly, frowning as he looked on at her. " No te olvides, hermana. she needed to get a new job.
"eeh, no es gran cosa," she replied, taking a swig of her drink and relishing the light burn of the alcohol down her throat. "i know you are a grown up boy, alonzo, but you are still a chiquito nino to me." leo ruffled his hair affectionately; she took another heavy drink from her booze, however, and the infinite tiredness returned swiftly. it sure came back like a bitch, she thought a little bitterly.
"if i quit, where would we go, huh?" leo quipped. "we would be out of money. we would have no way to support ourselves. tell me - do you have a hidden talent, hermano, that you have been keeping hidden from me? because my only talent is selling drugs and drinking booze."
albeit, she thought maybe they could have managed just fine with what they had, but she didn't want to start getting any funny ideas in her brother's head. it was important they kept a realistic grip on the situation. if they started thinking they could just go off and do whatever, they'd end up on the streets - or worse.
leonora sighed. suddenly, her appetite for drinking was gone. she slid the glass away from the counter and grabbed her brother's hand again. "i don't feel like drinking anymore," she explained. "let's go home, brother." the redhead led her sibling through the crowd, keeping a firm, reassuring hold on his hand until they got outside into the cool evening.
"i forget how nice nighttime is," she said after a minute, keeping their hands interlocked and heading down the darkening street. "usually i'm cooped up inside doing paperwork at this time." she glanced over at her brother, a sudden idea quirking up in her bright eyes. "say, brother, how would you like to take a vacation?"
