He didn’t get out enough. He was getting old way too fast for his liking, but it was definitely a sign he was getting old when exploring catacombs got the adult excited. Maybe he was too used to his own routine, but normal, young people probably didn’t have an attack when they thought about walking around dark catacombs. He imagined most soldiers recoiled at the thought of being assigned a mission in such a horrid place. Nevertheless, Peter’s broad grin wouldn’t disappear. The soldier was determined to get as much fun out of his mission as possible. It was just a scouting assignment anyway. Most of their intelligence said the mutant rebels were hiding in forests so there wasn’t really a need to worry about the catacombs. He figured they were too close to civilization to be of any use, but didn’t complain. Things would run more smoothly if he didn’t meet up with anyone. The young man inhaled deeply the damp air, a shiver going through him from the cold. As usual, Peter had opted to come shirtless. It wasn’t the smartest choice for a soldier of course, but the brunette was more concerned over the possible dripping ceilings. He was ready to get drenched from head to toe, and sit in bed for the new few days. To the super soldier, there was nothing better than a cold dip or a nice rain shower. Did that mean he was coldblooded? The man wondered this as he adventured forward, armed with only a flashlight, and a pair of extra batteries. His footsteps echoed faintly along with the distant dripping, and an occasional animal screech. “ I hope I don’t get covered in bat poop…” Peter muttered as his eyes adjusted to the light. The horror movie vibe the desolate place gave was starting to get to him. His empty hand twitched as he tried to keep it as his side and away from the broadsword he had brought with him. The soldier paused as he remembered the strangely filled arsenal of weapons the base had offered. It had been a little odd seeing swords paired along with guns and knives. On the other hand, they had let him join as well and he was supposed to be all kind of strange. Peter laughed at the thought, unsure what other career would have suited him back then. CDAA7D

She much preferred to be doing other things. Not that she could really list them off the top of her head at the moment. She hadn't wanted to go on this assignment, though, and it was something that she would continue to place emphasis on. The fact that it was in a dark, col,d icky catacomb didn't help matters. But someone mentioned that she'd be a perfect asset to the team, and that she'd bring light to those there had managed to brighten her up enough to get her stop dragging her feet. And then there was the fact that they could potential run into the rebel mutants. That, as well, was enough to spark her forward, the grudge she held against them ever fueling her to go forward and do her duty as a soldier. She was a perfect super soldier, who did not question why they went after mutants when they were like them. She hadn't wanted to be like them, and it was their fault that she had been turned into this.
Fingers curled tighter around the flashlight that she used to guide her path, her nose wrinkled up slightly in disgust from the cold. She didn't normally mind being cold, or wet, but this was something different. She eventually heaved a sigh and continued on her way, catching up to Peter and leaving behind the other soldiers that started to lag behind them. She didn't speak at first, she lingered in silence and shuffled her feet. Though, that only proved to make her situation worse as she heard the slippery slush of the ground beneath her and she tensed up slightly. Suddenly, she was completely on edge and uneasy but she forced herself to partially relax. ”Do you really think they'd be down here?” She questioned the older soldier with a frown before she peeked around. ”It'd be easier if we just went to the entrance and I screamed into the tunnel. It'd collapse most of anything, wouldn't it? And squish anyone who was inside.”
Not that she found a fascination in squishing people to death in a cave in, but, it would've saved them the trouble of looking, at least. [/style] |

His suppressed anxiety seemed to lessen as he heard one of his companions approach. The man offered a laugh as the young woman spoke. He didn’t believe there was anything terribly exciting for others in such a god awful place. Peter could only hope it was a quiet mission though. It would be dangerous for his fellow soldier to use her skills in the caverns. “ They’re hoping for someone with info to be around. Supplies we could confiscate is the only thing we’re likely to find, if anything at all.” He replied with a small sigh. It was only busy work to him. He supposed there was an advantage in the small blow but with the mutants mostly living in a forest he doubted it mattered much. They could fend sustain themselves well in a forest. “ Maybe we’ll find the remains of rebels here from long before our time. Who knows, they could have camped out around here for a bit at the beginning of it all.” The brunette added with a small shrug before he looked behind him. He and Cecelia were going to stay in the lead for a while it seemed. “ Whatever the case, it makes for an exciting outing.” He continued blissfully unaware of what lay ahead. It wouldn’t make a difference to him. The soldier was old but he was more than competent in a fight. He had the experience of facing a multitude of different opponents behind him. “ Where’s your spirit eh? Girls your age are full of spirit and seeking adventures.” The man teased, sending the younger soldier a sorry look. Cecelia looked a bit serious for her age so his jokes didn’t look like they would be appreciated. Peter moved forward careful to stay on his feet. He didn’t need to look stupid anytime soon. “ Maybe we’ll discover giant bats or something.” He said absently raising his light to illuminate the ceiling. Nothing out of the ordinary except a few bats. Not a horde of them, thankfully. He probably had to go deeper, where the stench of centuries old bat crap was unbearable. The man shook his head, trying to rid himself of the thought of bat poop. CDAA7D

I think they all set out a long time ago. If we're lucky, they forgot their supplies.” It was an idle hope, small and fleeting before she tilted her gaze back to the man before her. His back served as an odd tool to relax herself, perhaps because of his bigger stature she found herself easily hidden behind him. It was odd, and likely not the case nor the reason for her to suddenly be at ease once more. ”I suppose remains are better than living rebels.” Her nose wrinkled in disgust, not for the fact that they would be dead, but for the rebels in general. Her hate for them was not exactly a secret.
”Mm. You have an odd definition of exciting.” Not that she had voiced any words of disagreement for that. Instead, she merely continued on after him, also unaware of what lay before them, but certainly not blissfully. There was a time long ago that she could have been considered blissful, but such nature was hard for her to return to. Especially not when in the middle of a war, in icky catacombs with potential giant bats or dead rebels laying in waiting for them. She startled again at his teasing, eyes widened slightly at his words and then she retreated mentally as she considered the words he spoke. ”Really? I thought they'd be... More delicate.” The look he gave her, the sorry one, only served to quiet the young woman a little more as her thoughts slowly grew more distant and withdrawn, she even began to slow her pace.
She didn't miss the comment, though, about the bats and she chuckled softly. ”It sounds like you almost want them to come cover you in their waste.” She teased, though her tone was uncertain, as her gaze searched over him for an odd sort of confirmation for what she thought to be a joke. [/style] |
