He wasn't heartless like many humans seemed to think mutants were. Whether it was people or just animals, it was still something dying and Arty still felt bad either way. But it was necessary to be able to live. Arthur killed animals for the sake of food rather than like some people did just for sport. Everything he killed end up eaten by someone in the rebel army. Sometimes they would get more food than they needed, in which case, they were always willing to pass on what they could to the refugees. Both rebels and refugees were family. The rebels fought for them. They fought to save them and give them their rights to be free in the world. And it was Arthur here who led their side into this rebellion.
Currently, at his feet, Arthur had three rabbits. It wouldn't be enough, he knew that. They already had a bit stocked up back at the base, but he at least wanted to catch a deer before he went home. The rabbits were small and wouldn't be able to feed many of them. So the young male remained in his hiding spot, trapped inside a bush with a log in front of him for cover. He leaned against it, his bow at the ready. He had pulled an arrow from its quiver and laid it in place on the bow, aiming but seeing nothing.
There was absolute silence outside of birds chirping. But he never shot a bird unless it were a duck or a grouse. There was a deep, calming breath from the boy, his eyes narrowed in concentration, but he didn't notice even a small bit of movement. It was as if the forest was empty. Arthur lowered the boy, frowning in disappointment and trying to get on his feet again. He could at least move to a different area. There was no way he could have cleaned out this entire forest already. The place was too huge for that!

MIND BUT EVERYTHING LOOKS BETTER WHEN THE SUN goes down but i had everything! ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ Sometimes, she wondered why humans called them such rude things.
Monsters. Heartless. Cruel. She knew none of her refugees, her friends, her family were any of those things. They weren't monsters. They looked the same just as anyone else. They weren't heartless. If they didn't have hearts, they'd be dead. Cruel? That was far from the truth on more than one occasion. But then again, maybe that was her being the optimist. Adelaide knew that there were some who were all three things and so much worse. But that was something that couldn't be helped. Even so, she couldn't understand why certain individuals were the reason that an entire race was judged and shunned. But, she also supposed, it was maybe because they couldn't understand. People hated things that they couldn't understand. Like math. She really hated math.
But there was no time to think any further on the subject. She had chores. Busy, busy, busy! Today, she was on water duty. It was sometimes difficult to get a source of clean water to the Western Osiris District. Try and try as she might, she would never completely understand the plumbing system. It sometimes felt more like trying to understand the human nervous system. Something that she had never fully comprehended well into her mid-twenties. "Hup!" She grunted, picking up the wooden pole and throwing it over her back. Ada rested her arms on either side as the wooden pails swung side to side, sloshing with water.
It wasn't exactly hot water, but it was better than nothing. And besides! They could leave it out in the sun and that'd definitely make it warmer, right? Why yes, she really was quite brilliant. And with that, Adelaide turned on her heel in the opposite direction of the lake and walked on away. She supposed she could run now, but then she'd run the risk of evaporating all the water remaining in the pails. ...which again, would defeat the purpose of her little excursion out to the lake. So, it was decided that she would take a nice little walk today. She should be allowed to smell the flowers every now and then, right? Whistling a merry little tune, the girl continued walking down through the forest before catching sight of a particularly strange man hiding behind a log.
The edges of her lips curled upward into a smile.
She knew all too well who it was. Adelaide set down the pails onto the ground along with the pail before tiptoeing over towards the other with her hands curled up slightly. She resisted the urge to giggle. Her hands shot out and grabbed him by the shoulders, the girl breathing heavily on the other's neck. "Boo!" She shouted suddenly, giggling all the while before letting go and peering at the other. She was crouched then behind the log too, arms wrapped around her knees. She grinned sheepishly at the rebel leader. "Did I scare you?"

Arthur hadn’t heard the footsteps. He must not have been paying enough attention. After deciding his hunt was over, he had kind of just let his guard down, which was obviously a very stupid thing for him to do. If it had been a soldier out on patrol, he could have been dead right now. Not that they knew he was a mutant. He worked hard to keep his identity as the rebel leader a secret. Thankfully, it was a friend that was making him near pee his pants by showing up announced and grabbing him. In fact, it scared him enough that, when he jumped forward, trying to get over the log desperately, he… left himself behind. The man seemed to tear into two, one Arthur going over the log and the other staying in the place behind it. But both looked equally terrified.
”A-adelaide!” Arthur- the real Arthur who had made it over the log- shouted at the girl, sounding like a mixture of shocked, terrified and unamused. His legs were up on the log, his ass in the dirt, and soon his back flopping to hit the ground as well. Knowing that it was her allowed him to relax and let his guard fall a fraction, again. ”I think I just peed myself. “ That, or the dirt he’d fallen into was soaked, which was possible with how often it had been raining this season.
”I think you peed both of us,” Clone Arthur mumbled, peeking back over his shoulder to glare at Adelaide. Arty wasn’t amused and it was obvious in the look his clone gave her. But he could never hate her. Arthur and Adelaide were like brother and sister! They’d been together since forever and now, together, they led the mutant race that lived inside this city. Arthur wasn’t going to let one little scare tear their friendship and family apart. But he was going to get her back for that. Arthur was gonna pay her back for that scare and make it twenty times worse. He just had to find the right moment.
Finally, Arthur pushed himself out of the dirt, sitting up and peering over his clone’s shoulder to look at the girl. Unlike the replica, the real Arty offered a little smile to Adelaide and shook his head. ”You think that was pretty funny, don’t you? I don’t even care about an apology. I think you owe us a new pair of pants,” Arty pointed out as he turned his back to her so he could point out the lovely butt of his pants and back of his shirt, which were covered in mud. No one likes getting mud and grass out of clothes. It’s a pain in the arse and it’s easier to just buy new pants, which Arthur intended to nag Adelaide for until he finally got them. That’s what brothers do, right?

MIND BUT EVERYTHING LOOKS BETTER WHEN THE SUN goes down but i had everything! ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ Her laughter. It wouldn't stop.
Adelaide fell backwards too, holding her arms over her stomach and she struggled to keep from laughing too loudly. It was so funny, she thought. Surely, she was brilliant to have been able to outwit the rebel leader. She would have applauded herself if given the chance. She lifted a hand to her face, wiping the tears that dripped out of the corners of her eyes. God, that was amazing. The blonde girl sat up, kicking her legs up onto the log as she peered over it.
Arthur, she assumed it was the real one, had landed on the muddy ground. Adelaide stifled another laugh, knowing all too well that she'd probably end up being the one to clean them. Either that or purchase another pair. And that wasn't a particularly safe endeavor. Stepping into the town was more like assuring death, but then again. She had never tried doing so and had no intentions of doing so now.
"Arthur!" She shouted back in reply, throwing her arms up in the air excitedly. Though, Adelaide crinkled her nose at his next words. "Ewww. I could have lived my whole life without knowing that, Artie." She glanced at the clone then as she moved to get up from where she had fallen. Adelaide lifted her hand, giving a hard slap to the clone's back. "Oh, lighten up. No harm done, right?" She chirped in reply. He could never really hate her. She knew this all too well.
It was obvious that they were about to engage in their own microscopic war. Pranks aplenty. Water balloons ablaze, she thought. It'd be excellent. Her lips curled upward in a teasing smile. "Fine, fine. I'll clean them later. I can't buy you some new pants, otherwise I would have already bought me a shirt!" Adelaide waved it off before hopping over the log. "I did think that was pretty funny, actually." She grinned for a moment before offering her hands to the other. "Now get up. It'll stain more if you stay there, silly goose."
