This wasn’t the cleanest, or the safest, or by any means the nicest part of town, but Ella liked it just fine. The people here ranged all over the spectrum; from fat to skinny, from long hair to short hair. It was a variety and a mix that made it exciting, even if everyone’s clothes looked equally worn and the lines on their faces all had dirt permanently caked in them.
But those looks of hopelessness and weariness were the very reason Ella was there. She didn’t have another show for a few weeks and had decided to dedicate this time to the Southern Harlow district. The government almost completely ignored this crime-ridden portion of the city and the refugees had their own problems without worrying about the residents there. So it was up to Ella to try to bring some sort of comfort, or at least, she believed it was up to her.
It was her fourth day living there, crashing at different people’s houses every night and getting up early to roam the streets each morning. Her bodyguard insisted she get an apartment or something but Ella just couldn’t bring herself to settle down in one place, not when the world was in such unrest. Besides, one couldn’t truly be part of something unless they put their whole selves into it.
And that’s exactly what Ella did. She was seated on a crumbling front porch, surrounded by a respectably large crowd of people for it still being morning. She didn’t act better or separate herself from them as many would expect, but held hands with the ones around her while smiling at them all. One of them held an ancient looking guitar, strumming a few cords here and there while everyone talked.
As the conversations tapered off Ella started humming softly under her breath, causing the small crowd to fall into a hushed silence. The man with the guitar picked up on the melody and soon her murmuring turned into soft, sweet words that put smiles on even the most worn of faces. The music built until everyone was swaying along with her, people from across the street walking cautiously over to get a look.
The usual dreariness of the residential area seemed to be put on pause, if only for a few minutes, as her voice rang out. Ella had to fight the tears that threatened to spill out of her eyes, telling herself to be strong for these people. She wanted to make all of their lives better but she knew she couldn’t; all she could do was sing and pray that peace would follow. The late morning light slipping through the gaps, a soft rosy glow beaming over the buildings. The people in the southern district were seemingly distinct, their faces similar to that of their homes. Worn, tired, dirty. Their eyes were reproachful, guarded so heavily. He didn't like it.
For once in his life Silas had the audacity to visit the southern harlow area. He usually confined himself to the cleaner, richer environment of the north, ignorant to all the pain and hopelessness these people felt. He didn't want to see it, but today something stirred and one thing led to another as he crossed over. He had expected to see the district teeming with poverty and tainted by crime. But it wasn't those things that scared him; it was the fact that these people had completely abandoned hope.
Silas felt stupid, so horrible. How could someone like him, who had a place to live (even though it was like prison) and food to eat, possibly feel hopeless compared to these people? He wanted to do something, anything that would help them. But what could he do when he could barely look at all the tired, pained faces because they reminded him of his own piteous, wallowing self?
Somewhere nearby he heard a soft noise, faint but rich in melody. Silas slipped past people trying to find the source. It didn't take long as a crowd of people had gathered in front of a worn-down house. At first the snow-haired boy had no idea what was going on until he heard the sweet strums of a guitar. And then he heard it.
At first it was a small hum, a mere noise from the vocal chords, but the crowd started to hush, eyes pinned onto something; someone. Silas hopped, trying to get a glimpse past the people's shoulders but he could only see the back of heads and faces. The guitar strummed, drawing out its sweet melody and the voice rose; words formed by lips were accompanied by a soft, lilting song.
Everyone was smiling, some even laughing at the sweet melody. Soon enough they were swaying to the hopeful song, people joining hands and simply listening. He had to see who it was. Who was the person with that angelic voice? The unity of these people? The hope that seemed long forgotten?
The young boy stooped down, crawling across the dusty ground through the narrow paths between people's feet. There was an opening in the front, a split between the tide of bodies and Silas crawled forward, reaching for that voice.
He saw a woman sitting on the rickety porch. She had hair the hue of faint indigo with bright eyes, soft lips that uttered hope. Silas didn't know who she was. He wanted to know. But at the moment all he could do was listen and become another face in the crowd that was enveloped in the heartfelt song.

If Ella had grown up anywhere but in a highly populated city, the proximity of such strangers might have bothered her, but it did not. If she was not a performer their stares and smiles might have made her self conscious, but she simply brushed a stray strand of hair away from her face as she hit a high note in the song.
Their faces blurred together and slowly she shut her eyes, feeling a little bit dizzy. She had not eaten anything that morning, and very little the night before. She had not been sleeping well since she had come to the southern district; up late listening to the sounds of speeding cars and gunshots nearly all night. She felt disgusted with herself for her weakness when these people lived like this every day, while she could barely survive half a week of it.
Her dizziness didn’t matter; if singing was what put a smile on these people’s faces she would do it until she passed out.
But she did not get the chance to even finish the song—the sound of skidding tires causing everyone to turn and Ella to break off her song. Three large, black sedans turned the corner at the top of the street, and for a moment the crowd stared in fearful silence.
“It’s them—get her indoors!” Someone yelled, and suddenly there were hands on her; half pushing her, half carrying her into the house. Her heart leaped in fear, the world a blur as she realized she was unprotected; her bodyguard out getting food for the both of them. Who were these people in the black sedans? Ella struggled to her feet, slipping away from the people and toward the window for a look.
She only managed to see the crowd scattering quickly as dark-clad men with stun guns leaped out of the cars before someone yanked the curtain shut. Ella turned as someone else dead bolted the door, seeing that at least ten people had made it into the house with her. “Who are those-“ Ella didn’t get to finish however, someone putting their hand over her mouth.
Silently she struggled against their touch until she met the eyes of a woman standing across the room, shaking her head ever so slightly at her. Slowly Ella relaxed, and the hand withdrew. She was scared—scared they would find these people in this house, scared of what those men might be looking for. Were they mercenaries, soldiers? Ella didn’t know, but from the way these people acted they weren’t a force to trifle with if one valued their life.
The house was dark, all the curtains closed tightly to block out any sunlight and all lights kept off to avoid suspicion. Most people sat on the ground, huddled together with their eyes shut, their mouths moving in silent prayers. Ella tore her eyes away from them, feeling guilt. If it wasn’t for her they wouldn’t have been caught out in the open, so vulnerable and unprepared. But what had the man in the crowd said? Get her indoors.
“This is my fault…” She muttered to herself in horror, turning away from the crowd and heading to the back of the house. She did not understand, but if that was even the reason the men were here she could not take the chance these people would be found with her and hurt because of it. As silently as possible she began turning the key to the back door, preparing to slip away into the alley behind the house. The pitch rose to a higher octave and Silas felt goosebumps arising on his arms, a slight shudder running through his body. They hung on her every word, so in love with the melody that rippled through them. He was also captivated.
But the bliss was only momentary.
Like a smack in the face of reality a commotion roared in the back of the crowd, the wails of tires screeching against the pavement. The delicate, serene moment had been broken as the sedans parked and men rushed out, weapons in hand. The crowd broke into pandemonium, people yelling and running. Someone yelled to get "her" inside and a wave of hands and bodies pushed him against bodies, feet tumbling over each other. Panic struck through him, air suddenly gripping his lungs as bodies piled against him, trying to seek refuge.
He tried to grab onto to something, hating the feeling of claustrophobia from all the close contact. But someone grabbed onto him and shoved him inside the torn-down house, the door slammed shut; the outside world now shut with lock and key.
The snow-haired boy panted, leaning against the wall, trying to catch his breath from the sudden rush. His body trembled, legs barely holding onto his weight before he sunk down into a stupor. Not even half of the crowd had made it; a few handful of people at most. A soft hiss arose in the tense air, hushing the confused murmurs and cries amongst the people. Many were on the floor, kneeling and murmuring a silent prayer.
Silas felt so lost, so confused as he looked around, his eyes slowly adjusting to the dark room. He could slightly make out the figures within his vicinity, visible enough to see their anxiety and fear. He couldn't help but turn this way and that, taking in everything that was held before him. All the horror-stricken, paranoid eyes that were locked onto the door, the barrier between the pandemonium outside.
The snow-haired boy looked over his shoulder just in time to see something slip away, a mere wisp of a person. He slowly got to his feet, knees still buckling, as he lurched one foot after the other to the back of the room. He wasn't sure what he would find; maybe he had imagined someone. But to his surprise the woman was there, a key in her hand locking in place with the door. Despite all the puzzlement and paranoia surfacing, Silas managed to move forward.
"Y-You're running?" he blurted out with a soft intake of a breath.

She looked around, confused for a second, before looking down and seeing a tuft of white hair. Her heart melted and she let go of the key, leaving the door locked. She bent down to his level and smiled softly at him, a little surprised when she spotted his red eyes.
But she supposed it made sense, although she had never met anyone who was albino before she knew people with snow white hair and red eyes existed. She thought it was beautiful, but in the world they lived in any sort of uniqueness that made one stand out was dangerous.
She cupped his face with her hand and shook her head, saying softly, "I have to; I've put these people in enough danger." For the first time since the kid spoke Ella glanced away, looking for someone who looked as if they were missing a child. "Where's your Mother?" She asked quietly, her hand falling away from his face as she squinted into the darkness. She could not simply leave this child on his own here in the back of the house, she had to find his family and ensure them he was safe.
She tried not to think of her own family, her own little brother who had meant so much to her. How many times had she lost track of him and called his name frantically? Too many times, the fear only escalating once it was revealed that he was a mutant. The pain of losing him forever had been almost too much to bare; she would not let this boy's family go through the same fear.
'Unless he's alone, unless he doesn't have a family...' A small voice in the back of her mind whispered. Ella's heart clenched painfully in her chest at the thought; she had seen too many orphan children in the refugees' camp and on the side of the road begging for money and food. The war hit them hardest, no matter how you looked at it. But as she examined the boy the less likely it seemed that he was an orphan. His skin was clean of dirt and cuts, his hair washed and white and his clothes new. She let out a slow breath, glad for this as she waited for him to point out his parents. There was no doubt. Just on her appearance she was almost like some ethereal being, standing before him. She was that ray of hope for these people; and yet, she was leaving? So soon?
A soft palm against his cheek startled him and he flinched, unaccustomed to such tender feelings. The last he ever received such warmth was at the orphanage, and even then the reward for those poor children was a struggle to attain. However Silas didn't push away; rather he sunk into her warmth, calmed by her soothing voice that rung so clearly.
I have to; I've put these people in enough danger. Where's your mother?" |
He was still confused at the whole situation, unable to adjust to what was going on. What happened to all the people outside? Who were those men in those cars? Why were they trying to get her indoors? But all those bizarre questions flew out the window when the young lady asked about his mother. To him his mother was a blank face, a figure that he had no recollection of. But Silas knew of her a little bit; he still remembered his grandfather speaking of her sometimes. She was nice and warm, often stern, but caring for others. He still wasn't sure what happened to his mother though. Maybe she was somewhere else right now, doing something else. He didn't know why but he grasped onto that small hope that he would meet his mother again one day. But Silas didn't want to say all that to this lady, especially since he didn't know who she was. He realized he had spaced off for a short moment. "Oh, um...m-my mom's not here. I-I snuck out with my friends to come here. To explore." He nibbled on his bottom lip, fidgeting slightly. Silas was never a really good liar. "We got separated, c-cuz I heard you singing and I came over here. I l-live at Northern Charis," He added hastily to cover up any doubts she might have. It wasn't a total lie at least. Silas looked around, the questions suddenly rushing back into his mind and he looked up at the young woman. ► ooc: so sorry for the late reply!! >n<[/style]

[style=font-family: Courier New; font-size: 10px;]template by BRITZ☆ (aka KETSUE) of LS and BTN[/style]

He must be scared, bless his heart. Of course Ella was frightened too, but she had long ago learned to push those feeling away so she could attend to others. Not to mention a stubborn part of her refused to fear the people who had sworn to protect the city. She had never done anything wrong; never lifted a hand in violence, and singing for peace hardly seemed illegal to Ella.
While it was not technically illegal, Ella knew that what she did was frowned upon by the government and made her a target. She knew she should be more cautious, but it wasn’t in her nature to stop and think about every move she made. It seemed to be only a matter of time before she made a mistake that the government could jump on and lock her up for. But she knew that her situation was not half as bad as some of the people who lived in this district of the city.
She jumped a little when the boy’s words came out, his voice a little staggered and faltering. It did not cross her mind that he was lying, taking the hesitance and choppiness as fear of talking to a strange woman and being in a strange place with loud noises outside. When he finished speaking her eyes lowered to the ground, a small, faraway smile lingering on her lips.
She lifted her head to look at the boy again, taking one of his hands in both of her’s. “Northern Charis, you say? Well, you and your friends wandered very far from home; this isn’t the safest part of town right now.” Despite her words she smiled comfortingly at him, resisting the urge to hug him close to her. He must feel so lost; Northern Charis might as well be on a different planet for all it had in common with the Southern Harlow District. Ella would know; she had spent a great deal of time in both. She had grown up in a wealthy home in the Northern Charis district before going to college, and from college starting her life as a traveling singer.
Ella knew what she had to do, but the idea of returning to her old home sent shivers up her spine. Still, she knew that this was no place for a wealthy child, and also that if she didn’t get this boy back to his family soon there would be grave consequences. She could only hope that his friends hadn’t gotten caught up in whatever was going on outside.
A loud, commanding voice rose above the chaos outside and the sound of car doors slamming echoed a second afterwards. Ella froze, looking toward the front of the house as if trying to see through the wall. Were the people, whoever they were, leaving? It seemed so; the others in the house rising to their feet and moving slowly toward the windows and doors.
Ella pulled her eyes away, looking back at the boy with a contemplative expression. She felt torn; should she go and help the people who had protected her or should she slip away while she still could and take this boy back to his family? Her knees were beginning to burn from their extended contact with the unpolished wood, her eyes squinting as someone pulled open the door and let light stream into the house.
“Miss Sinclair, it’s safe now.” A man said, standing a few feet away with a tired expression. Ella nodded, getting to her feet slowly and smoothing down her dress with her free hand. With her other hand she continued to hold the boy’s hand firmly in her’s.
“Who were they?” She asked quietly as they picked their way through the house, emerging onto the front porch. Clouds covered the sky and all that remained of the sudden attack were a few black skid marks on the worn pavement.
“Mutant traders,” The man who stood next to her spat, eyeing the horizon with distaste. “They come through without warning; it hardly matters if you’re a mutant or not, you just want to stay out of their way.”
Ella was silent for a few seconds, not really understanding the seriousness of the situation. Mutant traders? She had heard rumors, but she had never come so close… Ella squeezed the boy’s hand reassuringly, turning to the man with a look or pleading determination, “Then why did you get me inside? I’m human, I could have talked to them, could have reasoned-“
“You don’t reason with these people, they don’t have morals like you and I; they’re just killing machines. You stand up for us and they wouldn’t give a second thought to taking you down, or worse, considering who you are.”
Ella stood quietly, soaking in what the man had said and trying to fight the tears that threatened to spill from her eyes. She had to believe there was good in everyone, even the people this man talked about with such hatred. She tried to understand what he meant; who you are, but she couldn’t bring herself to think on it for too long.
She stood up a little taller and smiled at the man, placing a hand on his shoulder and smiling. “Thank you, then, and I’m glad you’re alright.” The man’s solemn expression seemed to soften and he nodded to her before turning away, heading off to speak with the others. Ella watched him go before looking back down at the boy.
“I think that’s enough excitement for one day, don’t you think?” She smiled, hoping the boy hadn’t been listening to their conversation. Children were forced to grow up so fast these days with all the violence going on, it was all she could do to hope that this boy didn’t know what a mutant trader was.
